Driving change in Aged Residential Care
It’s all about the food!
The Care Homes service improvement programme changed life for residents in this small residential care home.
For many residents, daily life revolves around food, so staff decided to try and create a better experience. They developed an approach to food which incorporated ideas from team members.
They called in the “Dining Experience”, and it involved a wide range of ideas which did not cost much but added value and enjoyment to residents’ lives.
First was using the “good” crockery! Residents were served morning and afternoon tea using good china cups, saucers, and plates, creating a special event out of the daily routine. Staff also wore special aprons and laid the tables with pretty tablecloths and place settings.
The care home had residents from a wide range of cultures, so staff identified the different ethnicities of residents and offered culturally appropriate food items. They created special menus for each different culture represented in the home, making sure that residents felt special and included because the food that they had loved was regularly available.
The residents love their new Dining Experience and they have become more actively engaged - helping at mealtimes and cooking in the weekly BBQ!
Result – happier, more satisfied residents and happier, more fulfilled staff!
